This segment of the Shackleton’s Way leadership program examines the defining test of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s leadership—the moment Endurance was crushed by the ice in October 1915 and the extraordinary survival ordeal that followed.When the ship sank, the original mission was gone and the 28 men faced near-certain death.

 

Shackleton responded with complete composure, clear communication, and unwavering optimism. He set the standard by discarding his own valuables, offered personal encouragement to each man, and redirected the team with a simple, powerful vision: “Ship and stores have gone, so now we’ll go home.”

 

Over the next 10 months—six months camping on drifting ice floes, a desperate open-boat journey to Elephant Island, the legendary 800-mile voyage of the James Caird, and the first crossing of South Georgia—Shackleton kept the group cohesive and hopeful through constant vigilance, self-sacrifice, and visible presence in every crisis.
