Byrd, many would know that Roald Amundsen was first to the South Pole, and some might even have heard vaguely of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. But I doubt if anyone except a student of Antarctic literature would recognize the name of Sir Ernest Shackleton..."

What a lot has changed in 49 years.

January 2026 will mark the 25th anniversary of the publication of Shackleton's Way so I'm planning to reread Shackleton's Boat Journey, Lansing's Endurance and Roland Huntford's masterful biography, Shackleton and I look forward to sharing their gems.
