In Praise of Sam Adams

When the royal governor of Massachusetts, Thomas Hutchinson, was asked why he did not pay off or bribe Sam Adams, he replied, "Such is the obstinacy and inflexible disposition of the man, that he can never be conciliated by any office or gift whatever."
